The Shell Coffee Table by Fiam Italia, designed by Danny Lane, is a striking sculptural piece that celebrates the expressive potential of glass craftsmanship. Inspired by the organic forms of natural shells and geological layers, the table features a series of individually cut glass sheets stacked together to create a fluid, wave-like structure.
The defining feature of the Shell table is its heavy, 15 mm thick glass top. Rather than having uniform, factory-polished edges, the perimeter is entirely hand-sculpted and chiseled by master artisans. This deliberate fracturing creates a rugged, organic trim that mimics the uneven crust of a natural shell, catching ambient light in an incredibly vivid, glittering display.
Supporting the massive top is an architectural base crafted from five pieces of 12 mm thick glass, four of which are expertly heat-curved. Lane brilliantly utilizes the natural compressive strength of stacked glass, anchoring the overlapping segments together with sleek, minimalist stainless steel hardware.
Despite its heavy, brutalist physicality and substantial weight, the entire table is made from clear glass (available in standard Clear or crystalline Extralight). This means it anchors a room with undeniable artistic presence while maintaining an entirely open, fluid, and airy visual footprint. Because the flat top and the curved base elements undergo different thermal forming processes, they may exhibit very subtle differences in their natural color cast. This isn't a defect, it’s the authentic fingerprint of a complex, handmade glass sculpture.
